TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Sources in the South Korean National Intelligence Service revealed on Thursday, February 27, 2025, that North Korea has deployed additional troops to Russia, but the scale of the contingent remains unknown.

The report mentioned that the additional troops have been sent to the battlefield in the Kursk region, Russia. Russian forces are currently fighting against Ukrainian troops attempting to breach the western border of Russia. A spokesperson for the National Intelligence Service declined to comment on this when Reuters asked for confirmation.

The National Intelligence Service had previously stated that North Korea had deployed over 11,000 troops to Russia to fight in the war in Ukraine. Experts from Ukraine and Russia also mentioned that Russian troops were using weapons manufactured in North Korea. Pyongyang's official stance on its military support for Russia has not been formally announced.

Earlier in January 2025, Ukraine captured two North Korean soldiers in the Kursk region, Russia. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated that this was the first time Ukraine publicly announced the capture of North Korean soldiers alive since their involvement in the war last fall.

According to Kyiv and its Western allies, regular North Korean forces entered the war on Russia's side in October, initially estimating their numbers to be 10,000 or more. In a post on X, Zelenskiy mentioned that the two soldiers had been brought to Kyiv and were in communication with the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Ukraine's domestic intelligence agency.

"As with all prisoners of war, these two North Korean soldiers are receiving the necessary medical assistance," said Zelensky. Kyiv stated that North Korean forces fought in the Kursk region, where Ukraine launched an offensive in August. North Korean troops even still controlled several hundred square kilometers of territory there.
