TEMPO.CO, Medan - The North Sumatra Regional Police's Narcotics Crime Directorate arrested a drug mule, Andi Sahputra, a 39-year-old resident of Percut Village, Percutseituan District, Deli Serdang Regency.
Andi was captured at a fisherman's hut on Silobaru Street, Silaulaut District, Asahan Regency. The police confiscated 2 kilograms of methamphetamine packaged in Chinese Guanyiwang brand tea plastic, along with 2,000 blue ecstasy pills.
The arrest followed a tip from the public about someone bringing narcotics to Silobaru Village. The police went to the location and arrested Andi. During the search, the police found methamphetamine, ecstasy, a cell phone, and a wallet in a black backpack.
During interrogation, Andi claimed to be a mule acting on instructions from Mail, who is currently under investigation. According to him, the drugs were obtained from a Malaysian named Ling-ling Tan and were intended to be transported to Percutseituan by land.
Director of the Narcotics Crime Directorate of the North Sumatra Regional Police, Sr. Comr. Yemi Mandagi, stated that they are still pursuing Mail and delving into the involvement of a Malaysian citizen Ling-ling Tan in this network. "We will further investigate this case to uncover the network involved. Cross-country drug trafficking like this is very dangerous and damages the younger generation," said Yemi on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
The North Sumatra Regional Police is committed to eradicating drug trafficking to its roots. In addition to law enforcement, the police also take repressive actions by closing down locations known as drug trafficking hubs.
"The North Sumatra Regional Police is committed to eradicating drugs in this area, from large-scale drug dealers to the smallest levels. If there is any resistance that poses a danger, the officers will take decisive action, including measured shootings," said the Head of Public Relations of the North Sumatra Regional Police, Police Grand Commissioner Yudhi Surya Markus.
Night patrols continue to be intensified in vulnerable areas to prevent drug trafficking and other criminal acts. These efforts are coupled with massive public awareness campaigns targeting the public, students, and religious figures to highlight the dangers of drugs.
According to Yudhi, community involvement and collaboration with other stakeholders are crucial for suppressing drug trafficking in North Sumatra.
This commitment is evidenced by the revelation of 398 drug cases throughout January 2025. From these operations, a total of 519 suspects were arrested, consisting of 111 users and 408 traffickers.
"Evidence seized includes 5.17 kilograms of methamphetamine, 54.59 kilograms of dry marijuana, 27 marijuana plants, and 5,133 ecstasy pills. The North Sumatra Regional Police call on all elements of the community to actively provide information regarding suspected drug trafficking in their environment," he added.
