TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Immigration and Corrections provides special Christmas remissions to prisoners and special sentence reductions (PMP) to Christian and Catholic prisoners. The North Sumatra region recorded the largest number of recipients of Christmas remissions with 3,196 prisoners.

Then East Nusa Tenggara (1,894 prisoners), and Papua (1,447 prisoners). On the other hand, inmates who received the most reduced sentences came from North Sumatra (23 people), West Papua (23 people), and Papua (20 people).

Data from the Correctional Database System as of December 16, 2024 recorded a total of 274,166 prisoners throughout Indonesia. Of that number, 19,968 people are Christian. The provision of Christmas remissions and reductions in sentences this year has succeeded in saving the state budget up to Rp8,191,365,000, which was previously allocated for the food needs of prisoners.

Minister of Immigration and Corrections, Agus Andrianto explained that the granting of remissions and reductions in detention periods is a form of appreciation for prisoners who have shown good behavior, obeyed the rules, actively participated in coaching programs and have reduced their risk levels. This appreciation also aims to stimulate prisoners to be able to reintegrate into society more quickly.

"The Correctional System views punishment not merely as revenge, but must prioritize the aspect of coaching so that it can lead prisoners to repent and realize the mistakes they have made," he said in an official release on Wednesday, December 25, 2024.

The granting of this remission is based on various regulations, including Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning Corrections, Government Regulation Number 32 of 1999 and its amendments, and Presidential Decree Number 174 of 1999 concerning Remission.

Agus also conveyed his congratulations to prisoners who celebrated Christmas and received remission. he encouraged the inmates to continue to increase productivity and improve themselves. In addition, appreciation was given to Correctional officers, the government, and related parties for their contributions in supporting the development of Inmates.

"I hope that the development that you have received can build your capacity to become potential human resources, so that your return to society can provide benefits," he said.
