Queensland rugby league legend Trevor Gillmeister has been charged after an alleged incident outside a Brisbane CBD pub.

Police allege the 61-year-old committed public nuisance, assaulted an officer, and obstructed police near the Stock Exchange Hotel.

Officers also claim he was adversely affected by an intoxicating substance while in a public place at the time of the confrontation.

Gillmeister is due to face Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 2.

'Police have charged a 61-year-old Gordon Park man following an alleged disturbance at a licensed premises in Brisbane City on Friday, 14 November,' Queensland Police said in a statement.

'Shortly before midnight, police were stopped by a member of the public in relation to a physical disturbance inside the Charlotte Street venue.

'Upon arrival officers were advised the man had been evicted after allegedly assaulting a staff member.

'Police attempted to speak with the man and advise he was under arrest for public nuisance, when it will be alleged he pushed officers away.

'It will then be alleged the man became involved in a physical struggle with police before being arrested and transported to a Brisbane City Watchhouse.

'He has since been charged with one count each of public nuisance, assault and obstruct police.'

Gillmeister played 202 first-grade games between 1984 and 1997 for the Eastern Suburbs Roosters, Brisbane Broncos, Penrith Panthers and South Queensland Crushers.

He won back-to-back premierships with the Broncos in 1992 and 1993, becoming known for his devastating low-tackling technique that earned him the nickname 'The Axe.'

Gillmeister represented Queensland in 22 State of Origin matches from 1987 to 1996 and famously captained the Maroons in the 1995 clean-sweep despite battling severe blood poisoning before Game III.

He played three Tests for Australia between 1991 and 1994, scoring one try and contributing heavily through his defence.

Across his club career, he recorded 11 tries and became one of the most respected forwards of his era.

After retiring, Gillmeister moved into coaching and later took on high-profile roles as a defensive consultant and workplace health and safety advocate.

He works as a rugby league analyst at Channel 7 Brisbane and runs his own rugby league academy.
