TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Army (TNI) has confirmed that an explosion ripped through the Ammunition Depot II of the Army Equipment Center in Saradan District, Madiun Regency, East Java, on Thursday, July 16, 2026.

Brigadier General Donny Pramono, chief of the Army Information Service, stated that the blast occurred while personnel were conducting routine inspections and maintenance on ammunition stock inside one of the storage facilities.

"In this incident, one soldier was killed, four sustained serious injuries, and two others suffered minor wounds," Donny said during a press conference on Thursday.

He noted that the military has not yet determined the precise cause of the depot explosion. A deployed investigation team is currently conducting its inquiry on the ground.

Donny added that the military has cordoned off the area and closed access to the scene to prevent any further hazards. Only members of the investigation team have been permitted to enter the blast zone.

Nonetheless, he assured that the military is committed to ensuring all ongoing procedures, including the probe, are conducted professionally, objectively, and thoroughly to uncover and verify every fact.

He urged the public to allow the investigators the necessary space to conduct their work effectively. "We also urge everyone to avoid speculation about the cause of the incident before the entire examination process is completed," he said.
