TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Artificial Intelligence (AI) tech giant OpenAI is reportedly developing its inaugural hardware product that is connected to the ChatGPT ecosystem. Not a smartphone or smart glasses as previously rumored, OpenAI's first hardware is said to be a screenless smart speaker.
According to a leak from TechCrunch, the device is designed as a "humanlike companion" that lives inside the house instead of a passive voice command receiver.
Technically, the smart speaker being developed by OpenAI will be powered by OpenAI's latest interactive voice model, GPT-Live. This technology enables highly responsive, two-way voice interactions, natural conversation cut-offs, and user emotion recognition.
"The device seems to be having a “personality” and being able to proactively learn about its owner over time, providing more personalized service," as quoted from TechCrunch on Thursday, July 16, 2026.
The appeal of this device lies in the mechanical components inside its chassis that enable autonomous movement. This adaptive physical movement is designed to provide a psychological effect as if the device is alive. "[It's designed to] feel like a companion and become a physical manifestation of OpenAI’s ChatGPT," said the leaker.
Although it sounds advanced, OpenAI has not yet announced photos or specifications of the product they are developing. The information circulating so far remains a leak.
