TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Social Minister Saifullah Yusuf, also known as Gus Ipul, has announced that the People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat) at the Senior High School level will begin operations in June or July 2025, coinciding with the start of the 2025/2026 academic year. The first school will be located in Bekasi.
Here are six key points about the People's School, which will be launched this year:
1. People’s School to Launch in Bekasi
According to Gus Ipul, the school will be built near one of the Ministry of Social Affairs' centers in Bekasi. “Hopefully, we can start it this year in Bekasi, beginning with the senior high school level,” he said at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on Monday, March 3, 2025.
President Prabowo Subianto has requested that the People’s School commence operations this year and be well-prepared. Prabowo emphasized the importance of creating agents of change and providing decent education for children from extreme poverty backgrounds.
2. Utilizing Pangudi Luhur Housing Complex in Bekasi
The Ministry of Social Affairs is considering the Pangudi Luhur Integrated Center (STPL) in Bekasi, West Java, as the location for the People’s School. The Pangudi Luhur 2 housing complex, previously a rehabilitation center for visually impaired people, will be repurposed for this educational initiative. The STPL itself covers an area of 16 hectares, divided into three complexes.
Should the program proceed, social rehabilitation services will be relocated to the Pangudi Luhur 1 and 3 complexes.
3. Free Boarding School Concept
The People’s School is designed to provide students from low-income and extremely poor families with access to free, high-quality education. The concept is similar to a boarding school, offering not only education but also ensuring that students' nutritional needs are met.
“The main goal of the People’s School is to break the cycle of poverty. If the parents are poor, their children should not also have to be. This cycle must be broken by sending them to school,” said Minister Gus Ipul.
4. Pilot Project in Jakarta and Surrounding Areas
In its initial phase, the People’s School pilot project will be established in the Jakarta, West Java, and Banten regions. Gus Ipul hopes the program can start soon. “We plan to build it in three locations, first around Jakarta, then expand to other areas afterward,” he explained.
5. Funding Involvement from Baznas and the Private Sector
Regarding funding, the Ministry of Social Affairs is open to cooperation with various parties, including the National Alms Agency (Baznas) and the private sector. However, specific funding details are still being discussed after the completion of a foundational program study
“The implementation could be funded through government budgets, Baznas, or even cooperation with private companies. It all depends on the outcome of the study,” said Gus Ipul.
6. No Overlap with the Ministry of Education Programs
The Social Minister ensured that the People’s School would not conflict with educational programs under the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education. Gus Ipul stated that coordination with the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Abdul Mu’ti has been smooth and mutually supportive.
