TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The police have arrested four Malaysian nationals for attempting to distribute methamphetamine, or crystal meth, in the Sunter area of North Jakarta in mid-January this year.
"We seized 15 kilograms of crystal meth as evidence," said the chief of the narcotics and drug crime at the Criminal Investigation Unit of the Indonesian National Police, Brigadier General Mukti Juharsa, at the National Police Headquarters, South Jakarta, on Tuesday, February 11, 2025.
The four suspects are identified by the initials M, L, Y, and O. Mukti stated that the drugs were smuggled from Malaysia through land routes to Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
The suspects admitted to having previously smuggled crystal meth into Indonesia three times. The illicit substance was intended to be distributed across Greater Jakarta. "So, they are not couriers, but instead directly involved in selling (the drugs)," he said.
Mukti could not yet confirm whether the distribution network of the Malaysian nationals is linked to local drug rings in Jakarta. The four suspects received the crystal meth supply from a Malaysian supplier. The supplier, identified by the initial T, is currently being pursued by the Malaysian police.
"We are cooperating with local police there to pursue (the suspect)," he said.
The four suspects are currently detained at the Indonesian National Police Headquarters. Mukti stated that they are charged under Article 114 of the Narcotics Law, with a maximum penalty of death or imprisonment for up to 20 years.
