TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bogor City Police have named Bendi Wijaya, the truck driver involved in the Ciawi Toll Gate accident, as a suspect. Head of the Bogor City Traffic Police, Commissioner Yudiono, mentioned that Bendi was examined as a witness on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, after being declared fit by a doctor. Following the examination, the police named Bendi as a suspect.
"Based on the witness examination, we have named the individual as a suspect," said Yudiono to journalists on Thursday, February 13, as quoted from the Bogor City Police public relations video documentation. Yudi stated that the suspect was named based on witness examination, the suspect's statement, and evidence such as CCTV footage.
Yudi stated that Bendi jumped from the vehicle just before the collision. "(Based on the suspect's statement) he had made maximum efforts to control his vehicle, but was no longer able to do so and ended up jumping," said Yudi.
According to Yudi, the police are investigating the cause of the accident, including the possibility of brake failure. Bendi is charged under Article 311 of Law Number 22 of 2009 concerning Traffic and Road Transportation with a maximum prison sentence of 12 years.
On Tuesday night, February 4, 2025, the tronton truck loaded with gallons of water driven by Bendi collided with five vehicles at Ciawi Toll Gate, Katulampa Village, Bogor City. The vehicles were hit while queuing for e-toll payment. The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of eight people and 11 injuries.
