TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A police officer with the initials 'FAA' (Bripda FAA), a member of the Dairi Police, North Sumatra, died by hanging himself in his office on Monday, January 13, 2025. Acting Head of Public Relations of the Dairi Police, Bripka Junaidi, said the suicide case was revealed when the victim's colleagues found Bripda FAA's office locked at around 11:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
"We called him several times, but the victim did not answer. So we have to break the door down by force," said Junaidi when contacted on Tuesday, January 14, 2024.
According to him, Bripda FAA hanged himself using a computer plug cable that was hung in a cupboard. The victim was immediately evacuated to the funeral home in Sibiru-biru District, Deliserdang Regency, North Sumatra.
Junaidi said many personnel were shocked by the death of the deceased. He said that Bripda FAA worked in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) division every day.
"We are grieving and deeply saddened by the loss. He was a good person, diligent, never had any problems," he said.
Indonesia Police Watch (IPW) recorded an increase in suicide cases committed by police officers throughout 2024. IPW noted that throughout this year, nine members of the Bhayangkara Corps committed suicide. "The number has increased sharply from the previous year, which was only three cases," said IPW Chairman Sugeng Teguh Santoso in a written statement, Sunday, December 22, 2024.
Sugeng said the increase in suicide cases by police officers is a serious concern. According to him, the National Police institution needs to pay more attention to the mental health of its members.
"The National Police need to strengthen mental health development programs, supervision of work pressure and reduce the stigma related to mental health," said Sugeng.
Sugeng also encouraged the National Police to evaluate the supervision mechanism for police personnel. According to him, such supervision is important to ensure that the burden of police officers' duties does not cause psychological burdens.
