TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta Police have set up three public kitchens and temporary evacuation posts for victims affected by the fire in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. The area was engulfed by fire on Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at around 00:30 WIB (Western Indonesian Time).
Central Jakarta Police Chief Senior Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro said the public kitchen and evacuation post were to serve hundreds of residents who lost their homes due to this incident.
"We have currently prepared a field kitchen to provide food for the evacuees. We have also prepared a temporary evacuation post at the Central Jakarta Metro Police," said Susatyo in his official statement.
Susatyo said that the majority of evacuees consisted of children, women, the elderly, and babies. He hopes that this public kitchen will be able to provide nutritious food for evacuees due to the fire. "We are trying to meet their needs as best we can," said Susatyo.
The number of evacuees currently being accommodated by the Central Jakarta Police is around 400 people. Susatyo stated that he would add refugee tents to be set up on Jalan Kemayoran Gempol and Jalan Kemayoran Ketapang, Central Jakarta.
The fire that affected 11 RTs burned down 534 houses. The police suspect that the cause was an electrical short circuit in one of the residents' houses. A total of 30 fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire during the incident.
The police have questioned Slamet Wahyudi, 58 years old, as an eyewitness who first learned about the fire. Based on Slamet's statement, he saw smoke coming from the second floor of a resident's house at around 00:30 WIB.
Slamet stated that residents had tried to extinguish the fire, but the flames spread quickly because the house was dominated by wood and plywood as materials that are easily flammable.
There have been no reports of fatalities due to the incident. However, a resident named Febrian Yudi Saputra, aged 27, was reported to have experienced shortness of breath due to inhaling smoke and has undergone treatment at Hermina Kemayoran Hospital.
