TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police Criminal Investigation Agency are still assessing 46 Indonesian citizens who were repatriated to Indonesia after being trapped as victims of human trafficking (TPPO) in Myawaddy, Myanmar. The Indonesian citizens were successfully repatriated to Indonesia on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

Head of Sub Directorate III of the PPA-PPO Criminal Action Directorate, Senior Commissioner Amingga Primastito, said that the assessment activities for the 46 Indonesian citizens will continue on Monday, February 24, 2025. "We are giving them the opportunity to rest first so they can be fresh, there is no coercion and pressure during the assessment," said Amingga via the WhatsApp application on Sunday, February 23, 2025.

According to Amingga, currently the 46 Indonesian citizens are still categorized as victims. He said their status will only be evaluated after the assessment process is complete.

Previously, the Director of Protection of Indonesian Citizens (WNI) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha, said that not all Indonesian citizens evacuated from Myanmar were purely victims of TPPO. "Some of them are perpetrators," said Judha at Soekarno Hatta Airport, Jakarta, on Thursday night, February 20, 2025.

Some of the victims who decided to leave for Myanmar were suspected of having worked in illegal sectors such as online gambling. Most of them had also been online gambling admins in the Philippines. After being closed in the Philippines, this illegal business shifted to Laos and Myanmar.

Judha also said that there are still around 270 Indonesian migrant workers trapped in Myanmar. He explained that the evacuation of victims of human trafficking who are being held captive is still complicated, especially because the Myanmar government itself has not been able to control the crime.
