TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pope Francis, who is battling double pneumonia in the hospital, experienced acute respiratory failure twice on Monday, 3 March 2025. According to the Vatican reported by Reuters, the Pope used non-invasive mechanical ventilation to assist his breathing.

Pope Francis has been hospitalized at Gemelli Hospital in Rome for over two weeks. He has been treated since 14 February 2024 due to a severe respiratory infection that triggered other complications.

In the latest medical update, the Vatican said Pope Francis experienced two episodes of acute respiratory failure on Tuesday. It is caused by significant endobronchial mucus accumulation.

Pope Francis also suffered from bronchospasm, similar to an asthma attack. As a result, doctors performed two bronchoscopies to examine his airways.

According to a Vatican official, who requested anonymity, Pope Francis' condition is still critical. However, based on blood test results on Monday, his condition is stable. Doctors believe the respiratory disturbance is part of his body's normal response to fighting the infection.

Pope Francis has been hospitalized several times in the past two years. He is susceptible to lung infections due to having pleurisy in his early adulthood. He has undergone partial lung removal surgery.

Double pneumonia is a serious infection in both lungs that can cause inflammation and leave scars, making breathing difficult. He has not been seen in public since being hospitalized. His absence is the longest since the start of his papacy in March 2013. Doctors have not stated how long he will be hospitalized.
