TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto says the government has dismantled around 1,000 illegal mines across the Bangka and Belitung Islands, which he claims have caused an 80 percent reduction in national tin production.
“We have lost about 80 percent of our total tin production due to illegal miners and smuggling. I say stop this,” Prabowo said during a dialogue with Forbes Media Chairman Steve Forbes at the Forbes Global CEO Conference 2025, held at St. Regis on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
Prabowo also highlighted the government’s efforts to regain control over illegal palm oil plantations. Out of five million hectares of unlawful plantations, 3.7 million hectares have reportedly been restored.
“I believe that by the end of this month, we will have restored around 3.7 million hectares of plantations that have violated the law,” he said.
The former defense minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cracking down on violations in natural resource management. He urged the Attorney General and the Audit Board of the Republic of Indonesia to conduct thorough investigations.
“I tell my attorney general, my state audit board, do an investigation. Whatever you find, if there are cases, stop their concessions. And that’s what we are doing,” he added.
Prabowo emphasized that these actions are part of a broader effort to recover national wealth lost to illegal activities. “Law is law. Regulations are regulations. Those who violate the law must face the legal consequences. It’s as simple as that. We are efficiently reclaiming many assets,” he said.
On Monday, October 6, Prabowo oversaw the handover of national seizure items in the PT Tinindo Internusa area, Bukitintan District, Pangkal Pinang City, Bangka Belitung Islands.
The seized assets include six smelters and other properties from six illegal tin mining companies operating in the PT Timah area. The assets were officially handed over to PT Timah.
The Attorney General’s Office confirmed the seizure of these assets, which Prabowo estimated to be worth between Rp6 trillion and Rp7 trillion.
He further stated that total state losses from illegal tin mining in the PT Timah area amount to approximately Rp300 trillion, stemming from the operations of the six illicit mining companies.
