REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA, — President Prabowo Subianto announced that the National Strategic Project of the Giant Sea Wall will soon be built on the northern coast of Java (Pantura). The project aims to protect about 50 million residents from the threat of sea level rise due to climate change.

In a Plenary Cabinet Session held on Monday (20/10) at Jakarta's State Palace, Prabowo explained that the construction of a giant 535 kilometer sea dike in Pantura is the government's solution to the sea water rise that reaches 5 centimeters per year. This poses a serious threat to Indonesia, especially given that 60 percent of the national industry is located in the region.

Prabowo stressed the importance of the project to save the productive rice fields that are the nation's food granaries. “If we are not mistaken, 60 percent of our industry is on the north coast of Java. Tens of thousands of hectares of fertile rice fields are also there. We have to save,” he explained.

International Funding and Support

The Giant Sea Wall project is one of the National Strategic Programs carried out by the Prabowo administration to address the problem of rob and the impact of climate change in coastal areas. To fund the project, the government will offer several phases of its construction to partner countries through the Government and Business Entities Cooperation (KPBU) scheme.

According to Prabowo, the project, which has been planned since 1995 by the National Planning Agency (Bappenas), will cost at least 80 billion US dollars or about Rp1.297 trillion. Despite the long-planned, Prabowo remained optimistic and expressed the importance of starting construction even though it may not be completed in his term.

“This project is vital and it's something of a mega project. I don't know which President will finish, but we have to start and we will start,” Prabowo added.
