TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto held a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, November 18, 2024, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Prabowo and Modi discussed various strategic cooperation opportunities in the fields of healthcare, education, and trade to strengthen bilateral relations between both countries.

"Indonesia and India have a long and good relationship. We highly value this relationship and are committed to enhancing it in various fields," said Prabowo, quoted from the Presidential Secretariat's written statement.

Prabowo reveals Indonesia's urgent need for medical professionals, as Indonesia is short of 160,000 doctors. The retired TNI General hopes India can send professors and specialist doctors to teach at Indonesian universities.

Furthermore, Prabowo welcomes the interest in establishing foreign hospitals in the country and stresses the importance of fostering education collaboration by increasing the number of Indonesian students in India.

In the meeting, Prabowo also emphasized the significance of trade cooperation, especially related to rice imports from India. "We hope to finalize the rice import agreement with India," said Prabowo.

Modi, through a statement shared on social media platform X, expressed his pleasure in meeting President Prabowo for the first time in Brazil. Modi said this year is special for India and Indonesia as they celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations.

"Our talks focused on improving ties in commerce, security, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, and more," said Modi.

The Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through a written statement on Monday, mentioned that Modi and Prabowo reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Indonesia and India. Modi and Prabowo also exchanged views on global and regional issues.

No official statement has been released about the rice import agreement discussed by Prabowo and Modi. Previously, Coordinating Minister for Food Affairs Zulkifli Hasan, during an inspection at a rice warehouse in North Jakarta on Monday, November 4, 2024, stated that the government aims for the remaining rice import quota of 1 million tons to enter the country before year-end.
