TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto is holding a panel discussion with rectors and leaders of state and private universities across the country at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, March 13, 2025, at 4:30 p.m. local time.
Deputy of Protocol, Press, and Media Bureau of the Presidential Secretariat, Yusuf Permana, said the discussion aims to bolster communication between the government and academic community, especially in regards to strategic collaboration in higher education, research, and innovation.
"The panel discussion between the president and the academic community is also open to discussing concrete steps in fostering synergy between the education sector and the national policy direction," said Yusuf in his official statement on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
Prabowo mentioned higher education in Astacita during his presidential campaign. He intends to enhance human resources, science, technology, education, health, sports achievements, and gender equality, as well as strengthen the roles of women, youth, and people with disabilities.
In addition, improving higher education is also part of Prabowo’s cabinet priority, which is designed holistically and can touch on all aspects of the Indonesian nation.
However, Prabowo's government's performance in higher education has been criticized, especially during the recent wave of Indonesia Gelap demonstrations demanding the government revoke Presidential Instruction (Inpres) Number 1 of 2025. The regulation authorized budget cuts in various sectors—including education—which the students believe can exacerbate the national education sphere.
In addition, the All-Indonesia Student Executive Board (BEM SI) also rejected the plan to grant mining business permits (IUP) to universities as stated in the Minerba Bill. Students believe the policy could harm the academic environment, undermine campus independence, and contradict the principle of sustainability.
Earlier in February, hundreds of lecturers with civil servant status staged a protest in the front area of the National Monument, Central Jakarta, demanding the clarity of performance incentives that have yet to be paid since 2020.
