TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – President Prabowo Subianto visited the Embassy of Qatar in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, to express his condolences following the death of former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
During the visit, Prabowo signed the Book of Condolence, conveying his sympathy and prayers for the late former emir. In a message released by the Presidential Secretariat, Prabowo expressed condolences on behalf of the Indonesian government and people.
"On behalf of the people and government of the Republic of Indonesia, I express our deepest condolences for the passing of His Highness Father Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. May Allah, the Almighty, place him in the best place before God," Prabowo wrote.
Prabowo arrived at the Qatar Embassy on Wednesday afternoon and was welcomed by Foreign Minister Sugiono and Qatar’s Ambassador to Indonesia Sultan bin Mubarak Saad Al-Dosari.
Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani died at the age of 74 on July 12, 2026. He served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 before stepping down and transferring power to his son, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
Born in 1952 into the Al Thani ruling family, Sheikh Hamad studied at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom. Before becoming emir, he served as commander of the Qatari armed forces and later as defense minister.
He was appointed crown prince in the late 1970s as the successor to his father, Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad Al Thani. In 1995, Sheikh Hamad took power through a bloodless palace coup while his father was abroad.
During his 18-year rule, Qatar underwent a major transformation, emerging as a key regional player and one of the world’s wealthiest countries by per capita gross domestic product, driven largely by its vast natural gas reserves.
Under Sheikh Hamad’s leadership, Qatar adopted its first permanent constitution in 2004 and introduced municipal elections that allowed women to vote and run for office.
He abdicated the throne in 2013, handing leadership to Sheikh Tamim, who was 33 years old at the time and remains Qatar’s emir today.
