TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto invites member countries of the D-8, or Developing-8, to overcome their differences and unite to defend Palestine.
He conveyed the statement during his speech, addressing D-8 members at the New Administrative Capital Presidential Palace, Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, December 19, 2024.
“Once again, we must learn from the current geopolitical situation. Without unity, without overcoming our differences, we cannot be strong. We say we support Palestine. But if we are weak, how can we support Palestine? Therefore, Your Majesty, let us leverage our collaboration,” he said, as quoted from a written statement on Friday, December 20.
He said the D-8 is the third-largest economic bloc in the world, with a combined GDP of US$4.81 trillion last year. The PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) projected the group to rank among the 25 largest economies by 2050.
Furthermore, as D-8 countries are surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean, Prabowo underscored the untapped potential of blue economy for the group. Citing the global fishing industry's value of US$600 billion, he argued that a focused effort on the blue economy could strengthen the economies of D-8 member states.
“For that, we must unite and overcome our differences for the welfare of our people. Without unity and integration, we will be weaker and exploited,” Prabowo said.
