TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto wants Indonesian universities to play a bigger role in urban planning and housing policy, including helping regional governments with spatial planning and research on housing solutions.
The directive was conveyed during a closed-door meeting at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday, April 6, 2026, according to Higher Education, Science, and Technology Minister Brian Yuliarto.
Brian said universities will be encouraged to contribute studies and research related to urban spatial planning, particularly through architecture and urban planning faculties.
“The President has instructed that urban planning and architecture faculties at universities should assist regional heads so that spatial planning in each region, city, or regency can also become a field for student practice and research by lecturers,” Brian told reporters at the palace complex.
Under the policy, universities are expected to support local governments in managing urban development and improving spatial planning.
Prabowo also directed universities to get involved in addressing housing issues, Brian said. Campuses across the country are expected to conduct research and studies that could help the government tackle housing challenges.
“Later, of course, the Housing Minister, Mr. Ara (Maruarar Sirait), will coordinate, while we will handle the research aspect. Anything that can help and support efforts to address housing problems,” Brian said.
The meeting on Monday focused on government plans to provide housing for residents living along railway tracks. Officials attending included Housing and Settlement Areas Minister Maruarar Sirait, PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director Bobby Rasyidin, and PT Pindad President Director Sigit Puji Santosa, in addition to Brian.
Prabowo had previously pledged to provide decent housing for residents living along the railway tracks in Senen, Central Jakarta, following an impromptu visit to the area.
In a post on his Instagram account, @prabowo, the president shared footage of his visit to the railway-side settlement in Kramat, Pasar Senen.
“God willing, we will soon build decent housing for the people in that area quickly, and it is my commitment to provide decent housing for the people of Indonesia,” Prabowo said in the post on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
