TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - King Charles III officially revoked the royal title and honors of his brother, Prince Andrew, in a decision described as a collective step by the royal family to uphold the reputation and integrity of the British monarchy. The announcement was made by Buckingham Palace on Thursday, October 30, 2025, stating that the King had initiated the formal process to remove the style, title, and honors previously held by Andrew.
Decision to Strip Prince Andrew Supported by Royal Members
According to palace sources cited by People, the decision was not unilateral. King Charles is said to have consulted with senior family members, including Crown Prince Prince William, before the final decision was made. This step is understood as a consensus within the family regarding the future direction of a more streamlined monarchy with a focus on public responsibilities.
The decision was taken through royal prerogative, meaning it was a direct action by the King without the need for parliamentary process. This action is part of the royal family's effort to safeguard the monarchy's reputation amidst various controversies that still overshadow Andrew's name.
Although there is no direct confirmation from the palace, Queen Camilla and the Duchess of Cornwall, Kate Middleton, are also said to be morally involved in this decision-making process. As quoted from People, a source described a "feminine touch" in the way the announcement was made, depicting a balance between the typical communication style of the palace marked by firmness and empathy.
Consequences for Prince Andrew
With this revocation, Andrew is no longer entitled to use the title "His Royal Highness" in public, including the title of prince before his name. In official royal documents, he is now referred to as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor. It's reported by People that he will also lose his residence at the Royal Lodge and may possibly be moved to one of the family's properties in Sandringham.
This significant move comes amid King Charles' efforts to restore the monarchy's image after a series of controversies involving Andrew, including his relationship with the late Jeffrey Epstein. Several sources cited that the decision has long been deliberated and is part of the King's strategy to streamline the monarchy's operations, uphold its reputation, and affirm that public responsibilities are held only by active core family members.
A palace source told People, "The King understands that the monarchy's reputation depends on the integrity of each of its members. This is not an act of retribution, but a necessary step to safeguard the institution's future."
