TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The authorities of La Liga have canceled the match between Villarreal and Barcelona, which was originally scheduled to take place at the Chase Stadium in Miami, United States, on December 22, 2025. The La Liga Week 17 match will now take place at the Estadi de la Ceramica in Villarreal, Valencia.
In an official statement on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, La Liga stated that the decision was made following discussions with the official promoter in Miami. The statement read, "The decision has been made to cancel the organization of the event due to the uncertainty that has arisen in Spain over the past few weeks."
The plan to hold official La Liga matches outside Spain had previously sparked protests from several players and supporters. Protests even took place on the field, as players stood still for the first 15 seconds of the match last weekend.
Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois was one of the figures who opposed the plan. He believed that playing matches abroad would undermine the fairness of domestic competition. He said the decision to play in Miami is questionable because it's unfair.
Despite facing resistance, La Liga maintained that this move is part of its global expansion strategy. "LALIGA deeply regrets that this project, which represented a historic and unparalleled opportunity for the international expansion of Spanish soccer, will not be able to move forward," the league authorities wrote on their official page.
FC Barcelona respects the decision to cancel the match. In their statement, the Blaugrana emphasized that they accept La Liga's decision to cancel the match in Miami. However, they believe the policy could have been a great opportunity to expand the Spanish soccer market in the United States.
"FC Barcelona regret the missed opportunity to expand the competition's image in a strategic market with a great capacity for growth and generation of resources for everyone," the Catalan club wrote.
