TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Public Works has allocated a budget of Rp25 billion to audit the structural integrity of 80 Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) deemed at risk of collapsing.
Minister Dody Hanggodo stated that these funds will be used for the first phase of the comprehensive structural review. "The budget for reviewing the initial 80 samplings, which was the first phase, is around Rp25 billion," Dody confirmed after a coordination meeting at the Coordinating Ministry for Community Empowerment office in Central Jakarta on Friday, October 17, 2025.
This audit is part of the ministry's effort to ensure the safety and eligibility of facilities at religious educational institutions. Dody explained that the assessment aims to identify buildings at high risk.
"From the assessment results, we will identify which areas are prone to risk for the students' activities," said Dody. "We can identify buildings that are prone to collapse through the audit. So, our main focus is on conducting the audit first."
Minister Dody elaborated that the audit will prioritize pesantren that meet several criteria: those with more than a thousand students, buildings that are over 10 years old, and those with more than two stories.
He noted that the ministry has received numerous complaints through its hotline, though he did not provide exact details. He indicated that these complaints would be followed up on gradually. "There are already many; we just need to sift through them one by one, because it adds to the initial 80, right?" he added.
According to Dody, Minister of State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi has instructed the ministry to expand the audit scope. Dody stated the directive aims to prevent a recurrence of incidents like the collapse of the Al Khoziny Islamic Boarding School.
The collapse of the Al Khoziny pesantren building in Buduran, Sidoarjo, East Java, occurred on Monday, September 29, while hundreds of students were performing congregational Asr prayers on the floor being used as a musalla (prayer room).
