TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A recent survey by IndexPolitica Indonesia shows that Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has quickly become one of the most prominent figures in the national political landscape.

Purbaya ranks third in top-of-mind recognition among political figures, with 19.45 percent of respondents mentioning him, trailing only President Prabowo Subianto (37.12 percent) and former President Joko Widodo (24.25 percent).

The survey asked respondents to name political figures who come to mind first. Other notable names include Dedi Mulyadi (5.12 percent), Anies Baswedan (3.12 percent), and Ganjar Pranowo (2.68 percent). Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka ranks seventh at 2.25 percent.

Denny Charter, Executive Director of IndexPolitica Indonesia, described Purbaya’s rapid rise in popularity as the “Purbaya effect.”

“In a short period, Purbaya has gained significant recognition through his policies and actions since taking office as Finance Minister,” Denny said on Wednesday, October 29, 2025.

Denny suggested that part of Purbaya’s appeal stems from public desire for a change from his predecessor, Sri Mulyani Indrawati.

“This does not reflect negatively on Sri Mulyani’s performance, but the public seems eager for a figure who contrasts with her style,” he explained.

Purbaya replaced Sri Mulyani during the reshuffle of the Red and White Cabinet on Monday, September 8, 2025, officially taking over the ministry the following day. He previously served as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners at the Deposit Insurance Corporation (LPS).

In addition to his top-of-mind recognition, Purbaya also ranks second in electability as a potential 2029 presidential candidate, behind Prabowo Subianto.

According to IndexPolitica, 22.5 percent of respondents selected Purbaya, surpassing political figures like Gibran, Anies, and Ganjar.

“Prabowo Subianto leads with 40.12 percent, followed by Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa at 22.5 percent,” Denny said.

Anies Baswedan ranks third with 13.4 percent, Ganjar Pranowo fourth at 7.12 percent, and Gibran at 4.8 percent, slightly behind Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (5.12 percent).

Other names in the survey include Dedi Mulyadi (2.5 percent), Erick Thohir (1.12 percent), Mahfud Md (0.1 percent), and Yusril Ihza Mahendra (0.1 percent).

In a separate survey measuring vice presidential candidate electability, Purbaya leads with 28.65 percent, ahead of Dedi Mulyadi (20.15 percent), Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (15.75 percent), and Gibran (12.35 percent).

The survey, titled “Measuring Public Perception Regarding Political Issues Leading to the 2029 General Election,” was conducted from October 1 to 10, 2025, with 1,610 respondents selected through multistage random sampling. The margin of error is 1.6 percent with a 95 percent confidence level.
