TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa has confirmed that there will be no increase in subsidized fuel prices through the end of the year, even as global oil prices hit the US$100 per barrel mark. "This means that even if the price exceeds 100 within a certain period, we remain resilient with the existing budget," Purbaya stated during a working meeting with the House of Representatives' Commission XI on Monday, April 6, 2026.
Purbaya explained that as global oil prices began to soar, the Ministry of Finance immediately moved to calculate the state revenue and expenditure budget’s (APBN) capacity to absorb rising energy costs.
He noted that, based on calculations assuming oil at US$100 per barrel, the government can still maintain the budget deficit below 3 percent. "And through certain exercises, we can still contain the budget deficit at 2.92 percent of GDP," he added.
The Minister pointed to the current fiscal cushion, an excess budget balance (SAL) amounting to Rp420 trillion, to weather global uncertainties like the spike in oil prices. "What if the price reaches 150? We still have a SAL of Rp420 trillion. So, we have plenty of cushion," he said. Purbaya plans to further discuss the management of these SAL funds with Commission XI.
Meanwhile, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia stated that the government is still deliberating potential price adjustments for non-subsidized fuels. He mentioned that these discussions involve private gas station operators in addition to the state-owned Pertamina. "Regarding non-subsidized fuel prices, we are currently in discussions. These talks certainly involve other private entities," Bahlil said at the Ministry office on Monday, April 6, 2026.
However, Bahlil did not rule out a price hike for non-subsidized products. He maintained that the government is still searching for a pricing scheme that aligns with current economic conditions.
"Up until now, we are still regulating and seeking a sound and wise formulation. Obviously, the government fully understands the public's situation, regarding both subsidized and non-subsidized fuel," Bahlil concluded.
