TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Belgian national team player Radja Nainggolan was reportedly arrested by police in Brussels-Belgium on Monday morning, January 27, 2025. The arrest of the Indonesian-descent footballer was related to alleged cocaine smuggling from South America to Europe.
Based on a statement from the Belgian prosecutor's office reported by the BBC, Nainggolan's arrest was part of an investigation into drug smuggling from South America via the port of Antwerp.
"House searches took place mainly in the province of Antwerp and in Brussels. The investigation concerns the alleged fact of importing cocaine from South America to Europe, via the port of Antwerp, and its redistribution in Belgium," said a statement from the Belgian prosecutor's office, as reported by Antara.
Police raided 30 homes in Antwerp and Brussels on Monday morning local time as part of the investigation. One of those arrested was Radja Nainggolan.
"We can confirm that the RN footballer (Radja Nainggolan) has lost his freedom in the context of this case."
Nainggolan just joined the Belgian 2nd division, Lokeren-Temse after leaving Indonesian club Bhayangkara FC at the end of last season.
The 36-year-old player born in Antwerp, Belgium has played for a number of big European clubs, especially in Italy. He started his career in football by joining Piacenza before playing for Cagliari, AS Roma, Inter Milan. Next, he moved to Antwerp, SPAL, Bhayangkara Presisi Indonesia FC, then most recently defended Lokeren-Temse.
While playing for Bhayangkara FC in November 2023-July 2024, Radja Nainggolan was recorded as playing 10 times and scoring one goal. Overall, he has a record of playing 582 matches at club level and scoring 67 goals. He also won the Italian League title with Inter in the 2020/21 season and the 2022/23 Belgian League.
