Real Madrid offered their apologies after inadvertently showing a picture of the wrong player during a memorial tribute featuring Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva.

The Liverpool star and his brother, who played for Portuguese side Penafiel, both tragically passed away this summer in a car accident in northern Spain.

The footballing world was plunged into mourning with the two players' clubs leading tributes from sides around the globe in the following months.

But in a tribute to notable figures who have lost their lives over the past year, Real Madrid accidentally included a picture of Andre da Silva, who currently turns out for LaLiga side Elche, rather than Silva himself.

'Real Madrid C.F. apologises to Elche C.F. and its player Andre da Silva for having mistakenly included his image in the obituary of an institutional video instead of that of Andre Silva, the brother of Diogo Jota, the Liverpool player,' a statement posted to social media read after the mistake had been remedied. 'We regret this incident.'

After the video was broadcast at the Ordinary General Assembly of Representative Members, club president Florentino Perez also offered a verbal apology of his own for the mistake.

By chance, Real Madrid are preparing to play Elche on Sunday night in domestic league action.

The Spanish giants had previously placed a special tribute to Jota and Silva ahead of their Champions League trip to Anfield before the international break.

Xabi Alonso laid a wreath at the memorial site for the footballers, close to where Jota wrote his name into the Liverpool history books as the winner of multiple pieces of silverware, including last season's Premier League trophy.

Jota's former team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold, who left Merseyside over the summer, also prepared his own arrangement to honour the star, with a personal message honouring their friendship.

'My mate Diogo. You are so missed but still so loved,' the card attached to the floral tribute read.

'Yours and Andre's memory will always live on.

'I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared.

'Miss you mate, every day. Love Trent and family. Forever 20. YNWA.'

A red PlayStation console pad was also put down at the scene in honour of Jota's well-known love of gaming. The red Playstation pad was signed: 'Forever a champion 20. TAA.'

Alexander-Arnold and Jota played 145 times together for the club during their mutual tenures, helping the club win one Premier League, one FA Cup, two League Cups and one Community Shield in that period.
