TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Marapi located in West Sumatra erupted again on Friday, March 7, 2025, at 2:45 a.m. West Indonesia Time (WIB). This eruption is the largest throughout March 2025.
The report from the Mount Marapi Volcano Observing Post (PGA), Teguh Purnomo, stated that this eruption caused an ash column about 1,200 meters above the peak or 4,091 meters above sea level. "The volcanic ash appears dark grey and leans towards the north," he said.
This eruption was recorded on a seismogram with a maximum amplitude of 30.7 millimeters, with a duration of approximately 2 minutes and 4 seconds.
"Currently, Mount Marapi's status is at Level II or alert," he said.
He urged residents, climbers, and tourists not to enter the 3-kilometer radius from the Verbeek Crater, the center of Marapi's volcanic activity.
"Residents residing around the valley and river streams originating from this mountain are also advised to be cautious of potential lahar floods, especially during rainfall," he said.
If there is ash rain, people are advised to wear masks to prevent respiratory disturbances. In addition, people are asked to remain calm, not to spread unclear information, and to follow the directions of the local government.
The governments of Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang, Tanah Datar, and Agam are requested to continue to coordinate with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) in Bandung, as well as the Mount Marapi Observing Post in Bukittinggi to monitor further developments.
Meanwhile, some residents in one of the Mount Marapi information WhatsApp groups stated that the eruption caused tremendous tremors. Even the roofs of houses seemed to be lifted due to the enormity of the explosion produced by the eruption.
