Rio Ferdinand was fooled by a fake screenshot of a game he played in for Man United, while trying to make a point on X.

The United legend was attempting to back up an argument he was making, following up a post of his own promoting an interview with Wayne Rooney

He wrote: 'Do not compare this animal to the likes of Kane, Shearer & them mans pls… Most Complete CF in Premier League History.'

He then added a fake screenshot, presumably without realising the image and scorers had been doctored.

It showed David Beckham and Ronaldinho looking disappointed behind a poorly photoshopped image of Rooney, who was down as scoring a hat-trick in a 4-0 Champions League win at Old Trafford against AC Milan in 2010.

Milan also played in their black strip that night, rather than the famous red and black stripes in the picture shared by Ferdinand.

Rio Ferdinand used the above fake image to make a point about Wayne Rooney on X

Ferdinand is pictured with Rooney in the actual Champions League game at Old Trafford in 2010 - in which the striker scored a brace rather than hat-trick in a 4-0 win

The score was indeed 4-0 in the 2010 round of 16 second leg, but Rooney scored a brace, with Park Ji-Sung and Darren Fletcher also on the scoresheet.

Ferdinand was in the starting line-up that night at Old Trafford, partnering Nemanja Vidic in defence, making it even more surprising that he didn't spot the errors.

At time of writing, the 46-year-old has kept the post up on his X profile rather than deleting it.

Rooney was appearing on Ferdinand's podcast and was speaking about the striker debate mentioned by his ex-team-mate in his X post.

Rooney explained: 'He’s a clever lad Harry and he knows he’s never been the quickest but I think he’s lost a little bit of sharpness.

'He scored I don’t know how many goals last season for Bayern. He’s a goalscorer, he’s clinical but he’s clever in terms of the positions he’s picking up.

'I watched Bayern Munich in the Club World Cup and it was almost like (Francesco) Totti for Roma, where he’d drop in and there’s runners off of him.

'But gradually as the ball got further forward and they might come back out and went back round the other side, he then makes his way in the box.

Ferdinand started for United in the game, making it more surprising he was duped

Ronaldinho and Co played in all black rather than the kit from the photoshopped image

'So it's not a sprint but he’s in there and he’s in and around there and if he gets a chance, he scores. For me, he's the greatest ever England number nine.'

Ferdinand then asked if Rooney thinks Kane has become a better player than he was in his playing days.

The 39-year-old added: 'As a player, I’m not sure. I think I could do things which potentially he couldn’t. I was nastier than him as well.

'In terms of goalscoring, he creates goals. People say, ‘Oh, he’s scored against San Marino or this team.’ He scores every game.

'Does he play well all the time? No, but for me he’s above everyone.'
