TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian wave surfer Rio Waida has risen to sixth position in the World Surfing League (WSL) rankings after finishing as runner-up at the Surf Abu Dhabi Pro. This event served as the second stop on the Championship Tour (CT) and concluded on Sunday, February 16, 2025.

According to WSL ranking records on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, Rio has accumulated 9,130 points from the two CT tournaments he has participated in. The Indonesian-Japanese surfer earned 1,330 points after finishing in the round of 32 at Pipe Pro in Oahu, Hawaii, USA, at the end of last month.

Rio had to acknowledge the brilliance of veteran surfer and GOAT, Kelly Slater, who scored a total of 14.83. The Indonesian flag bearer at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Opening Ceremony scored a total of 12.83.

In Abu Dhabi, Rio had to concede to the brilliance of Brazilian surfer and 2019 world champion and Olympic gold medalist, Italo Ferreira. Rio's total of 14.50 points was not enough to surpass Ferreira's total of 17.27, which clinched the title and top spot in the rankings.

Rio earned 7,800 points thanks to his impressive performance in the CT tournament, which featured artificial wave technology along a 500-meter wave located on Hudayriyat Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE. Following the tournament, Rio expressed heightened determination and motivation to compete in more competitions and work harder to achieve his goals.

"I'm very happy that I'm bummed for getting second place. It means I'm not satisfied and there's a fire in my heart that really wants to win," Rio said in his Instagram post after the tournament on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

"But at the same time, I'm so blessed to have more moments like this. It means a lot for my career and the journey and trying to enjoy my path. Understanding myself, who I am and where I am at, and how I feel, and just taking [it] step by step towards my goal. Thank you."

Rio expressed gratitude to his team, including his new coach Rainos Hayes, who also coaches Ferreira, his sponsors, and his family for their support. With a total of 11 CT events in the 2025 season, nine events remain. Rio Waida's next appearance will be at the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal at Supertubos, Peniche, Portugal, on March 15-25.
