TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Around 20 Islamic countries, all members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), held an Iftar event in Romania on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. This agenda became an unusual diplomatic moment, as Prime Minister of Romania Marcel Ciolacu joined the gathering.
The Iftar was not only attended by Marcel Ciolacu but also the Minister of Economy, Digitalization, Entrepreneurship and Tourism Bogdan-Gruia Ivan, the Minister of Family, Youth, and Equality of Romania, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, and several other Romanian officials.
The Indonesian Ambassador to Romania and Moldova, Meidyatama Suryodiningrat, said this Iftar event strengthens the relations between OIC countries and enhances diplomatic cooperation to face global challenges.
As the call to prayer echoed in Bucharest, the attendees broke their fast and performed the Maghrib prayer together. The rest of the evening was filled with cultural activities, and diplomats had the opportunity to display the traditional foods of their countries.
In his speech, PM Ciolacu emphasized the importance of Ramadan as a unifying moment. "Ramadan unites us, strengthens the Muslim community in Romania," he said, hoping that this holy month brings happiness, health, and peace to all Muslims living in Romania.
Amidst the vibrant atmosphere of the event, Rana Mokkadem, Ambassador of Lebanon and Chairperson of the Diplomatic Representation of Arab States in Romania, delivered a message of humanity, urging the attendees to remember their brothers and sisters suffering in various parts of the world.
She urged people to embody solidarity for Palestine, Congo, Sudan, Ukraine, and Lebanon through the spirit of Ramadan.
In line with Mokaddem, the Saudi Arabian Ambassador to Romania, Mohammed Abdulghani Khayat, who also serves as the Chair of the Diplomatic Representation of OIC Member States in Romania, emphasized the values of Ramadan.
He prayed for the people of Palestine. He stressed that Ramadan teaches compassion, forgiveness, and contribution to world peace.
The meeting concluded with friendly interactions between diplomatic representatives and Romanian government officials.
