Ruben Amorim still doesn’t know what he is going to get from his Manchester United team despite being in charge at Old Trafford for 11 months.

Amazingly, United haven’t won back-to-back games in the Premier League since May 2024 as Amorim tries to build on last weekend’s home victory over Chelsea at Brentford on Saturday.

The United boss admitted on tour in the US this summer that he would dread going to some games last season because he wasn’t sure his team would be competitive, and he conceded on Friday that their erratic form means that he still isn’t sure what to expect from him players.

‘It’s normal that the fans don't know what is going to happen the next game,’ he said. ‘To be honest, I have an idea, but I don't know how it's going to be – and I'm the manager of the team.

‘The best way of dealing with that is approaching every game like it's the last one. I understand the feeling of the fans, so let's start changing that feeling to present ourselves with the urgency of what we need to do on the pitch.’

Asked about the importance of building momentum, Amorim added: ‘It's really important. We talk about that in the end of the game. We need the sense of urgency that we need to win, no matter what.

United take on Brentford tomorrow and Amorim praised former Bees forward Bryan Mbeumo

‘It's going to be really difficult. Every time we start to prepare for the next game and watch the opponent, we think it's going to be really tough. I have that feeling.

‘But for me, we cannot control the game. The most important thing is to start the game like we did against Chelsea and Burnley. These kind of games, we need to be really focused and have the feeling of needing to win every match.’

United’s visit to the Gtech Community Stadium sees Bryan Mbeumo make his first return to his old club since a £71million move to Old Trafford in the summer.

Amorim has been very impressed with the Cameroon international, who has scored twice against Burnley and Grimsby as well as winning a free kick against Chelsea that saw Robert Sanchez sent off, and his other summer signing from the Premier League, Matheus Cunha.

‘Everything he has been doing has been really important for us,’ said Amorim. ‘The light he brings to the dressing-room. He is not the guy who talks, but he is always there to help us. He runs a lot, presses a lot, he is a different threat to last season. I'm more than happy with Bryan.

‘You can see that every player you want to buy in the Premier League is really expensive. But if you look at our moments last year, you want to take the less risky move. It's really important to have top players in our team. If you look at Bryan and Cunha, they have done this for years. It was something we looked at, players in the Premier League.’
