The San Francisco 49ers have signed veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld to a one-year deal, adding depth behind starter Brock Purdy.

Sudfeld, 30, returns to the Niners after previously spending time with the team in 2021 and gives the 49ers additional insurance behind Purdy, who has battled with injuries.

Furthermore, according to NBC Sports Bay Area, backup quarterback Mac Jones was absent from practice after seemingly injuring his knee during Saturday’s game.

Sudfeld’s most notable career moment may have come as a member of the Eagles, where he earned a Super Bowl ring as part of the team’s 2017 title run.

He served as a backup to both Carson Wentz and Nick Foles during that season and has since played for the Detroit Lions and 49ers in various capacities.

His return to San Francisco suggests the front office is keen to reinforce its quarterback depth with a player already familiar with the team’s playbook.

A sixth-round pick by the Commanders in 2016, he has spent seven seasons in the NFL with Washington Philadelphia, San Francisco and Detroit.

Over that span, he has appeared in six games, completing 25 of 37 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown.

In another move, the team has placed running back Patrick Taylor Jr. on season-ending injured reserve.

Taylor had contributed as a reserve back but will now miss the rest of the campaign.
