TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Riyadh on Sunday, February 9, 2025, firmly rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's speech regarding the relocation of Palestinians from their homeland to Saudi Arabia. Egypt and Jordan also condemned Netanyahu's stance, calling it a violation of Saudi Arabia's sovereignty.
Earlier on Thursday, February 6, 2025, Netanyahu jokingly mentioned Saudi Arabia (instead of Palestine) when interviewed by Channel 14, but he corrected the mispronunciation. The Saudi Arabian Ministry, without mentioning Netanyahu's name directly, said Netanyahu's comments were about establishing a Palestinian state in Saudi Arabian territory.
Egypt and Jordan condemned Israel for wanting to relocate Palestinians to Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia said it appreciated the rejection conveyed by the two countries regarding Netanyahu's remarks.
“This extremist occupation does not understand what the Palestinian territories mean to the brotherhood of the Palestinian people and the good relations, history and legal status of the land,” the Saudi Foreign Ministry said.
The discussion on the fate of Palestinians in Gaza has taken a new turn after US President Donald Trump’s surprise proposal to take over the Gaza Strip and create a ‘Middle Eastern Riviera’ by relocating Palestinians to other countries. Arab countries have condemned Trump’s proposal, which came as a ceasefire was in place to ease the Gaza war.
Trump said Riyadh was not demanding the establishment of a Palestinian state as a condition for Saudi Arabia’s normalization of ties with Israel. However, Riyadh has denied Trump’s statement, saying it would not be willing to establish relations with Israel without the establishment of a Palestinian state.
The Gaza war has killed more than 47,000 people. Gaza has a population of 2 million. A ceasefire agreement has been in effect in Gaza since January 19, halting an Israeli war that has caused widespread destruction and left the Palestinian enclave in ruins.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November last year for Prime Minister Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its war in the enclave.
