Second Phase of Indonesian Humanitarian Aid Arrives in Port Sudan

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian delegation carrying the second phase of humanitarian aid from the Indonesian government to the Sudanese government landed at Port Sudan International Airport on Friday, October 18, 2024, at 14:00 local time, or 19:00 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), according to a press release received by Tempo.

Upon arrival in Sudan, the Indonesian delegation was welcomed by Anas Altayeb Aljilani Plh. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, Ismat Mustafa Yousif Deputy Federal Minister of Health of Sudan and his staff.

The humanitarian aid sent was in the form of medicines, medical devices, logistics and some goods according to the request of the Government of the Republic of Sudan. The aid is worth approximately USD1 million, it was then unloaded from the hull of the plane shortly after landing.

The handover of the humanitarian aid was officially carried out by representatives of both countries. The Indonesian government was represented by the Deputy for Rehabilitation and Reconstruction of BNPB, Jarwansah. While the Government of Sudan was represented by the Deputy Federal Minister of Health, Dr. Ismat Mustafa Yousif.

The handover was witnessed by the Sudanese Government, delegates from Indonesia Deputy for Logistics and Equipment of BNPB Lilik Kurniawan, Indonesian Ambassador to Sudan Sunarko, Head of National Coordination of Baznas Achmad Sudrajat Salim, and other delegates.

The 53.6-ton aid was sent in three sorties via Fujairah airport from Jakarta to Port Sudan. Weighting 15 tons, the first sortie landed in Port Sudan on October 16, 2024. The second sortie, which weighed 9 tons, arrived on October 18, 2024. On October 20, 2024, a 29.6-ton final sortie is scheduled to be sent to Port Sudan.

Among the aid items are medications, 2,000 folding jerry cans, 1,100 food packages for expectant mothers and children, 10 refugee tents, 150 water purifier units, and 3,000 hygiene kits. Furthermore, Baznaz provided medical support valued at USD135,000.

In addition, the Ministry of Health in Sudan will provide assistance to different health facilities and refugee shelters across the country. The Sudanese Directorate General of Emergency and Epidemic Control oversees other aid, while the Sudanese National Medical Supply Fund is in charge of coordinating medical aid.

This humanitarian aid for Sudan is the second installment that the Indonesian government has donated to the Sudanese government; the first installment was sent in April 2024. In addition to lessening the burden that the conflicts and natural catastrophes that have struck the Sudanese region have placed on the people of Sudan, this help is a sign of the two nations' brotherhood and togetherness.
