TEMPO.CO, JakartaSega has reportedly decided not to release any more Mini consoles, dashing hopes for a Saturn or Dreamcast revival. According to an IGN report last week, the Japanese game company has released a number of Mini consoles based on the Sega Genesis, but has so far not continued the trend with Mini versions of the 1994 Saturn or the 1998 Dreamcast.

Sega fans have been eagerly awaiting the launch of a Mini console to play classic games. However, Sega America and Europe CEO, Shuji Utsumi, revealed in an interview with The Guardian that the company will focus more on the future in planning new products. "I'm not going in the Mini direction. That's not me. I want to embrace modern gamers," he said, as quoted by IGN on Monday, December 30, 2024.

"We're not a retro company. We value our heritage very much. We cherish it, but at the same time, we want to provide something new. Otherwise, we'll be history. That's not our goal," said Shuji Utsumi.

Although not releasing a new Mini console, Sega has big plans to revive classic games with a modern twist. New games in the Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and Virtua Fighter franchises are in the works.

These games are being developed alongside the successful Sonic, Persona and Yakuza series. Creative Assembly is working on a new Total War game and Alien Isolation 2, while Sports Interactive is continuing its ever-popular Football Manager.

In an interview with the BBC, Shuji Utsumi also mentioned that Sega is considering launching a video game subscription service, which would compete with EA Play, Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. “We are thinking and discussing something that we cannot reveal right now,” he said.
