Series of Earthquakes Spoil Eid Celebrations in Indonesia's Aceh

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a series of temblors in northern regions of Sumatra, Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District since Sunday, March 30, until today, Tuesday, April 1, 2025. The latest earthquake occurred this morning at 05:56 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

The latest earthquake recorded by BMKG has a magnitude of 3.2, 39 kilometers northwest of Jantho, Aceh Besar, at a 5-kilometer depth. The earthquake was felt at a II MMI scale by local residents, but no further impact was reported by the agency.

Another earthquake jolted the region on Monday night at a 4-kilometer depth. The 3.9-magnitude tremor occurred at 11:42 p.m. WIB and could be felt in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar with a II MMI scale.

In his statement regarding the overnight earthquake, the BMKG Head for Region I, Hendro Nugroho, said it was triggered by Great Sumatra Fault activity in the Seulimeum-North segment.

"This earthquake is part of a series of temblors in Aceh Besar that have occurred since March 30, 2025, with a magnitude of 5.2, where the 3.9 earthquake that occurred now is the 39th earthquake event," said Hendro.

Between the two earthquake events, BMKG also recorded two other earthquakes that could be felt in Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar. Both had a magnitude of 3.5 on Monday morning at 7:54 a.m. and 2.8 on Monday evening at 6:10 p.m.

Prior to this, Banda Aceh City and Aceh Besar District were rocked by a shallow ground earthquake on Sunday morning, March 30. The strongest of the tremor was felt in the areas of Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar with a IV MMI intensity scale. According to BMKG criteria, at that scale, the earthquake tremor was felt by many people inside the house.

According to BMKG data, the ground earthquake had a magnitude of 5.2 - revised from the initial 5.4 magnitude. It was recorded to have occurred at 09:58 a.m., 16 kilometers northeast of Banda Aceh, with a depth of 12 kilometers.

"A shallow earthquake due to the activity of the Seulimeum fault," said the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, Daryono, in a statement shared after the earthquake.
