TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As technology advances, online shopping continues to grow in popularity. While it offers convenience and efficiency, shopping via e-commerce also comes with risks, particularly the potential theft of personal and financial data. To minimize exposure to cyber threats such as phishing, identity theft, and account hacking, the following precautions can be taken when making online transactions.
1. Use a Secure Connection
Devices without proper security measures may expose sensitive financial information and passwords to cyber threats. To reduce this risk, it is advisable to use a secure internet connection and ensure that the device’s security system is active. Transactions should be conducted over a trusted, private network rather than public or shared WiFi, which is more vulnerable to hacking. If using a wireless network is unavoidable, encrypting the device or using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) can provide an additional layer of security.
2. Verify Store's Reputation
Purchasing from a well-established and reputable online store generally ensures a safer transaction. When shopping from an unfamiliar store, conducting prior research is recommended. If a purchase is being made through social media platforms, verifying whether the seller operates on a trusted marketplace can help mitigate risks. For popular products such as skincare or clothing, buying directly from the brand’s official website is often the safest choice.
3. Beware of Suspicious E-commerce Platforms
Cybercriminals frequently create fake e-commerce websites and applications that closely resemble legitimate platforms to deceive users into sharing their personal data. These fraudulent sites may request sensitive information, including personal identification details and payment credentials such as credit card numbers and CVV codes. According to Bank Mandiri, extra caution should be exercised when encountering suspicious links from websites, emails, or messages from unknown senders. Verifying the sender’s identity helps ensure that any communication originates from an official e-commerce provider.
4. Steer Clear from Stores Asking for Excessive Information
While online retailers typically require basic details such as a shipping address, phone number, and email address for processing payments, requests for additional sensitive information should raise concerns. Providing bank account details, social security numbers, or driver’s license numbers is not advisable. Some businesses may request optional details regarding customer preferences, but discretion should always be exercised when sharing such information.
5. Keep Confidential Information Private
Sensitive financial information, including credit and debit card PINs, expiration dates, three-digit CVV codes, card limits, User IDs, passwords, and OTPs, should not be shared with unauthorized parties. Payment-related data must remain strictly confidential. Even when dealing with trusted individuals, sharing financial information carries risks. Data breaches can occur unexpectedly, and compromised information may be misused if it falls into the wrong hands.
6. Monitor Personal Data Regularly
Regularly reviewing personal data can help detect potential leaks through unsafe websites. Changing PINs and passwords periodically is recommended, particularly if they have not been updated for an extended period. A strong password should include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, symbols, and numbers. Default passwords, birth dates, phone numbers, and other easily guessed personal information should be avoided.
