TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Minister of South Korea, Cho Hyun, in a telephone conversation with Oman's Foreign Minister, Badr Albusaidi, sought support from Oman in supplying energy sources, including liquefied natural gas (LNG) and crude oil.
The South Korean government had previously raised its alert status for potential oil supply disruptions to level two out of four on March 18, following the crisis in the Middle East and a de facto blockade in the Strait of Hormuz.
South Korea has also secured a priority supply of 18 million barrels of oil from the United Arab Emirates, the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated in its Tuesday release as reported by Antara.
In addition to energy issues, the two ministers discussed the developments in the Middle East.
Cho Hyun expressed gratitude for Oman's role in supporting the operations of the Cheonghae naval unit deployed in the region and requested assistance from Omani authorities if there is a need to evacuate South Korean citizens from conflict areas.
Both sides agreed to maintain communication and cooperation to accelerate the recovery of peace and security in the Middle East.
Tensions escalated since February 28, when the United States (US) and Israel launched attacks on several targets in Iran, including in Tehran, resulting in thousands of civilian casualties.
Iran then retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.
This situation triggered a de facto blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping route for oil and LNG from the Persian Gulf countries to the global market.
As a result, oil export and production in the region were disrupted, causing a rise in global energy prices.
