TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - South Korea will begin an impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday, January 14, 2025. Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached after declaring martial law that lasted only 6 hours. His decision plunged South Korea into its worst political turmoil in decades.
As reported by Reuters, the Constitutional Court hearing is likely to be shortened because Yoon Suk Yeol is not expected to attend. He is said to be hiding in a villa located on a hillside in Seoul. More substantive arguments are likely to be presented at the next hearing scheduled for Thursday.
The Constitutional Court must decide within 180 days whether to remove Yoon from office or restore his powers as president. Yoon Suk Yeol is also facing a criminal investigation on charges of rebellion. Authorities are trying to execute an arrest warrant after he ignored a summons for questioning.
Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law declaration announced on December 3, 2024, was revoked after about six hours. His decision to declare martial law has plunged South Korea, one of Asia’s most dynamic democracies, into a period of unprecedented political turmoil.
Seok Dong-hyeon, a lawyer for Yoon, said Monday that the suspended president would not attend Tuesday’s hearing. Meanwhile, Yoon’s chief of staff said Tuesday that Yoon’s office was ready to consult with investigative authorities to avoid any clashes during the execution of the arrest warrant.
Investigating authorities, including the Corruption Investigation Office for Senior Officials (CIO) and police, received a reissued arrest warrant from a South Korean court. They failed to detain Yoon for questioning for 48 hours after a standoff with presidential security guards earlier this month.
