TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Netflix's original series, Squid Game 2, has once again set a global record by becoming the most-watched content in just one day since its release. The sequel to Squid Game immediately shot to number 1 on the watch list in 92 countries, according to FlixPatrol data. The United States, France, Mexico, England, Hong Kong, and Turkey are included in the long list of countries that have succumbed to the allure of the deadly game. Only New Zealand did not make Squid Game 2 the top.
Continuing Gi Hun's Story
The story of Squid Game 2 begins 3 years after Seong Gi Hun (Lee Jung Jae) won the deadly game. In the latest teaser description, Netflix wrote, "Three years after winning Squid Game, player 456 abandons his intention to go to the United States and returns with a new determination in his mind". This time, instead of enjoying his winnings or leaving Korea, he chooses to return. With strong determination, Gi Hun tries to uncover who is behind the sadistic game and tries to stop it.
With a reward of 45.6 billion won, the search begins for the man in the suit playing ddakji in the subway station. However, his mission is far more dangerous than he imagined. A new battle between Gi Hun and Front Man (Lee Byung Hun) becomes the core of the second season's story. A new game is held, presenting increasingly thrilling tension. The second season was released on Thursday, December 26.
Reported by Variety, the first teaser for the second season of Squid Game was first screened at the Lucca Comics & Games event in Europe, which was also attended by the creator of the series, Hwang Dong Hyuk, and the two main actors, Lee Jung Jae and Wi Ha Joon. Hwang Dong Hyuk said that the second season will explore Gi Hun's emotional side and journey as he faces memories and trauma from the previous game.
Success Notes and Records of the First Season
Reported by the Korea Times, just two days after airing on September 17, 2021, the first season of Squid Game entered Netflix's top 10 and ranked first for eight days. Not only that, Squid Game stayed in the top 10 for a total of 106 days. Awards after awards were won, including three nominations at the 2022 Golden Globes for Best Drama Series, Best Actor for Lee Jung Jae, and Best Supporting Actor for O Yeong Su.
Director Hwang Dong Hyuk also made history as the first Asian filmmaker to win the 2022 Emmy Awards for Best Director of a Drama Series. The second season is proof of whether Squid Game can maintain its success.
Cast and Plans for Season Three
In addition to Lee Jung Jae, Wi Ha Joon, and Gong Yoo who returned from the first season, Squid Game 2 introduced a new cast. The new actors involved in this second season include; Im Siwan, Kang Ha Neul, Park Gyu Young, Park Sung Hoon, Jo Yu Ri, Yang Dong Geun, Kang Ae Sim, Lee David, Lee Jin Uk, Choi Seung Hyun (T.O.P), Roh Jae Won, and Won Ji An.
Their presence, plus the direction of Hwang Dong Hyuk who remains in control as director, scriptwriter, and producer, is expected to be able to freshen up the nuances of this series. He also leaked that Squid Game will have a third season with a broadcast schedule in 2025.
