TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sudan formally reported the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Wednesday, accusing them of supporting genocide against the Masalit tribe in Western Darfur.
Khartoum stated that the UAE provided significant financial, political, and military aid to the rebel militia, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The UAE enabled "genocide, murder, theft of property, rape, forcible displacement, trespassing, vandalism of public properties, and violation of human rights," according to the Sudanese government as reported by Anadolu Agency on Thursday.
Khartoum revealed that their legal case was initiated in 2023.
They have requested the ICJ to implement urgent measures. They are also asking Abu Dhabi to prevent any further genocide based on Article II of the Genocide Convention.
However, the UAE has rejected the accusations made by Sudan at the United Nations Security Council. The UAE denies the claim that they have supplied weapons and ammunition to the RSF, which has been fighting the Sudanese government for nearly a year.
Abu Dhabi considers this action to be merely a publicity stunt and has asked Khartoum to withdraw its report.
"Sudan’s priority should be to cease fire in this absurd and destructive war and address the massive humanitarian catastrophe," said United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Anwar Gargash.
According to the UN, since April 2023, the RSF has been fighting the Sudanese government, resulting in more than 20,000 deaths and 14 million people being forced to leave their homes.
Research from several universities in the United States estimates that the total death toll could be around 130,000. The conflict has spread to 13 out of 18 states in Sudan.
The fight for control of Sudan's capital, Khartoum, has led to the complete breakdown of the country. In the Darfur region, the conflict is spreading even more severely.
In this region, the RSF and their allied fighters from Arab nomadic tribes have targeted the Masalit tribe, who are non-Arab.
The RSF has denied being involved in attacks on civilians in Darfur. However, they recently surrounded and attacked the Zamzam refugee camp near el-Fasher in Northern Darfur."
