TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A survey conducted by Ipsos in Britain revealed that the number of British citizens who believe Prime Minister Keir Starmer has performed well has increased. Starmer has increased his diplomatic role in addressing the Ukraine war.
Earlier, Starmer met with US President Donald Trump in Washington on February 27, 2025. He also chaired a meeting attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders on March 2. Reuters reported that Starmer has played a role, on one hand trying to protect Britain from US import tariffs, but on the other hand also mediating the Ukraine war.
An Ipsos survey for The Times newspaper showed that around 30 percent of British citizens believe that Starmer has performed his duties well as prime minister. This support has increased compared to last month's 23 percent. However, 45 percent of respondents still consider that he has not performed his duties well.
The Ipsos survey, conducted online on March 4 and 5, 2025, involved interviews with 981 adult respondents aged 18-75 throughout Britain.
Starmer met with Trump in Washington a day before the altercation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump in the Oval Office of the White House. Trump made changes to US policy towards Ukraine.
The leaders of European countries on March 2, 2025, agreed to hold talks in London to prepare a peace plan to be presented in Washington. Meanwhile, on March 6, 2025, European leaders agreed to support plans to allocate more budget to defense.
The Ipsos survey also showed that 44 percent of British citizens believe that state spending on defense should be increased. Although this means that the country would have to borrow more money, increase taxes, or cut budgets for public services.
