TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Taiwan reported on Thursday, February 27, 2025, that it had detected 45 Chinese military aircraft near the island, the highest number recorded this year.
The surge in activity follows Taiwan's condemnation of China's drills conducted off the island's southern coast. As reported by Al Arabiya, China claims Taiwan as part of its territory. China has repeatedly threatened to use force to bring the self-governing island under its control.
In recent years, Beijing has increased the deployment of fighter jets and naval ships near Taiwan. This military reinforcement to assert its sovereignty has been strongly rejected by Taipei.
According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, between 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning and 6 a.m. on Thursday morning, 45 aircraft and 14 Chinese warships were spotted near Taiwan. This marks the highest number of Chinese aircraft detected since December 11, 2025.
On Wednesday, Taiwan accused China of conducting combat exercises involving aircraft and warships. These combat exercises were followed by live-fire shooting about 40 nautical miles (74 kilometers) off its southern coast. Taipei condemned this action as dangerous and in violation of international norms.
In response, the Taiwanese military deployed its own forces to monitor, issue warnings, and respond appropriately, according to the defense ministry.
The Chinese foreign ministry declined to comment on the recent military activities. However, Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Thursday urging Beijing to exercise restraint and stop military provocations.
The international community was also called upon to pay attention to the security of the Taiwan Strait and the region, as well as to condemn China's actions.
The dispute between China and Taiwan began in 1949, when the Nationalist Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek fled to Taiwan after losing the civil war in China to the communist forces led by Mao Zedong. Although never ruling Taiwan, Beijing regards it as a renegade province and insists on reunification, even by force if necessary.
Historically, Taiwan has been ruled by various foreign powers, including the Dutch, Spanish, Qing Dynasty of China, and Japan. Taiwan eventually established its own government in the late 20th century.
