A college football player was rushed to hospital in Iowa on Saturday after collapsing in the aftermath of a huge tackle.

Iowa State tight end Benjamin Brahmer was smashed in the head and neck area by Keith Abney ll of Arizona State as he tried to catch a pass during the fourth quarter of their game.

Brahmer was slow to get up and looked to be in severe pain initially before managing to get himself onto one knee as teammates checked on his condition.

He then returned to his feet slowly and tried to make his way off the field before he then collapsed to the turf in terrifying scenes.

Medics quickly rushed onto the field and rolled him over with his horrified teammates taking a knee and watching on.

A cart was eventually brought onto the field and Brahmer flashed a thumbs-up before being taken to Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

The Cyclones' coach, Matt Campbell, later said they had received 'positive' news about his player.

'It was tough to watch, and Ben is as tough as they come,' Campbell said, adding that Iowa State would give further information on Brahmer's condition on Tuesday.

Brahmer had 29 receptions for 319 yards and three touchdowns this season going into Saturday's game. He had three receptions for 48 yards and a touchdown in the ASU game before the incident took place.

'We're just happy that guy's all right, he's conscious. We'll miss that guy. He'll be back better than ever,' quarterback Rocco Becht told reporters.
