Mike Elko is set to become one of the top five highest-paid coaches in college football as he finalizes a new six-year, $11m-a-season deal with Texas A&M.
The Aggies have enjoyed a remarkable 9-0 start to the season and ESPN report that the head coach is soon to be rewarded with an upgraded contract.
Sources claim the team is in the process of ironing out the details with Elko, with an announcement to follow. He currently earns in the region of $7m a year.
Elko is in his second season in Texas after arriving from Duke, and he is currently in the midst of leading his team to an historic season.
The Aggies are ranked No 3 in the playoff rankings and a victory over South Carolina on Saturday will provide the team with a first 10-win season since 2012.
The last time they recorded a 10-0 start to a season was 1992.
Mike Elko is closing in on a contract extension that will pay him over $11m a year at Texas A&M
The team has started the season 9-0 and faces South Carolina Gamecocks this afternoon
It wasn't an ideal start at Kyle Station, though, with Texas A&M quickly down 20-3 in the first half against the Gamecocks.
Last season, Texas A&M took a seven-game winning streak into South Carolina and had perhaps its worst performance of the year in a 44-20 loss.
That was the beginning of a downward spiral for the Aggies as the first of three losses in four games that dropped them to 8-4 and spoiled any shot at making the College Football Playoff.
Elko, 48, was ACC Coach of the Year during his time at Duke in 2022 and is 17-5 during his time with Texas A&M.
He is familiar with College Station having previously acted as the defensive coordinator with the team from 2018 to 2021, before taking his first HC role at Duke.
