The Love Journey of President Macron and His Wife With a 25-Year Age Gap

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of France Emmanuel Macron is currently making a state visit to Southeast Asia. He and his wife, Brigitte Macron, landed in Hanoi, Vietnam prior to their tour to several countries including Indonesia.

Upon landing in Hanoi on Sunday night, May 25, 2025, an incident showed his wife nudging Macron's face before disembarking from the plane. The scene was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media.

Macron has explained the incident. He told reporters that the couple, who have been married since 2007, was joking around. "We were joking and, really, joking with my wife," he said. He added that the incident was blown out of proportion. "It became sort of a geo-planetary disaster," he was quoted as saying in France 24.

The Love Journey

The love journey of Macron and his wife has long attracted public attention. The 47-year-old president married Brigitte, who is now 72 years old, in 2007. Throughout their 18 years of marriage, Macron has always shown attention and affection towards his wife, who is 25 years older than him.

As reported by The Mirror, Macron met Brigitte at the age of 15. At that time, he vowed to marry Brigitte Trogneux, her name before marrying Emmanuel Macron. Brigitte was a mother of three children who was already married at the time.

Emmanuel Macron's parents tried to stop their school-aged son's love affair. At that time, Brigitte was Macron's drama teacher.

Their love story has captivated French tabloids and magazines and emerged as a main storyline during Macron's strong presidential candidacy. Macron, who was elected in 2017 as the fifth youngest president of the Republic, has repeatedly honored his wife and supported her.

Their love story blossomed when Trogneux, Brigitte's family name, taught Macron when he was 15 years old at a Jesuit college in Amiens. A book published in 2017 stated that he defied his parents' orders to end their love affair. Emmanuel's father ordered Trogneux to stay away from his son until he turned 18.

Trogneux cried, who was known as Brigitte Auziere at the time (her family name after marriage), replied, "I cannot promise you anything." In 2016, she said in a French documentary that Brigitte was not like any other teenager in his class, as reported by BBC News.

She recalled how Macron proposed to write a play together. "I didn't think it would continue. I thought he would get bored. We wrote, and little by little, I was truly captivated by the intelligence of this young man." At the age of 16, Macron's parents sent him to Paris to continue his studies, but he vowed to marry Trogneux, who was around 40 years old.

Trogneux recounted in the documentary: "We called each other all the time and spent hours on the phone. Little by little, he overcame all my rejections, in an extraordinary way, with patience."

The relationship continued after he moved to Paris. Emmanuel grew up and graduated from university, and eventually moved into investment banking. It is unclear when their relationship turned into a serious romantic relationship.

Briggite eventually joined Macron and dropped her family name after divorcing her first husband who gave her three children. The couple, Emmanuel and Brigitte, do not have children.

Macron often responds to comments about their significantly age-differentiated relationship. "No one would find it odd if the age difference were reversed. People find it difficult to accept something genuine and unique," he said.
