TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Meeting with former presidents and vice presidents, along with several former foreign ministers, President Prabowo Subianto spent more than two hours explaining his decision to join the Board of Peace and discussing the war involving Iran. At the State Palace in Central Jakarta on Tuesday evening, March 3, 2026, Prabowo said the rising tensions in the Middle East would sooner or later spill over to Indonesia.
Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who attended the meeting, said Prabowo wanted to anticipate the impact of the war between Iran and the United States and Israel on the energy sector. Iran is one of the world's largest producers of crude oil and controls the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most important shipping lanes for tankers from oil-producing countries. "Fuel could become scarce and gasoline prices could rise," Kalla told Tempo on Friday, March 6, 2026.
In this meeting, Prabowo also explained the reason Indonesia joined the Board of Peace created by US President Donald Trump. The General Chair of the Gerindra Party said Indonesia remained a member of the multilateral body even though the United States, its initiator, was currently at war with Iran.
Kalla was the first guest to respond to Prabowo. The former General Chair of the Golkar Party recounted his meeting with Iran's Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, several hours before attending Prabowo's invitation. Kalla said Boroujerdi reported mounting casualties in Iran and hoped for support from Muslims, including those in Indonesia. "I was the first to convey that," Kalla said.
