TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto had just stepped out of the swimming pool at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java, when Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Sufmi Dasco Ahmad called him through the cellular phone of Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya. It was Friday morning, August 29, 2025, and Dasco was informing Prabowo that riots had erupted in several cities.
The night before, Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver, was killed after being run over by an armored vehicle belonging to the Jakarta Metropolitan Police’s Mobile Brigade. Affan’s death sparked waves of demonstrations in Jakarta and other major cities. As the protests spread, posters and viral messages calling for mobs to attack the homes of several lawmakers circulated on social media and messaging apps. One of the targets was Dasco’s house in Bendungan Hilir, Central Jakarta.
“I told the President that I had evacuated my family,” Dasco said in an interview with Tempo on Thursday, October 16. Prabowo advised Dasco to stay cautious and keep him updated on the situation. Dasco also told the President that a protester had died after being run over by a police vehicle.
Four politicians from the Gerindra Party familiar with the President’s communications said that Prabowo first learned of Affan’s death from his conversation with Dasco. According to these sources, several officials had actually tried to inform Prabowo through Teddy Indra Wijaya on the night of Thursday, August 28, shortly after the incident.
Those who attempted to report to Prabowo that night were National Police Chief Gen. Listyo Sigit Prabowo and State Intelligence Agency (BIN) Chief Muhammad Herindra. But the message only reached Teddy, as Prabowo had already retired for the evening. Listyo and Herindra did not respond to Tempo’s messages and phone calls as of Saturday, October 18.
