Thousands of Gazans Suffer Hearing Loss from Ongoing Conflict

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United Nations (UN) has stated that tens of thousands of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are experiencing hearing impairment due to prolonged exposure to repeated explosions during the ongoing Israeli military attacks since October 2023, as reported by Antara.

In a report released on Saturday, June 27, 2026, coinciding with the International Day of the Blind and Deaf-Deaf Blindness, the UN revealed that the protracted conflict has not only caused immense casualties and infrastructure damage, but has also severely exacerbated the conditions of people living with disabilities in Gaza. Many of them have lost vital assistive devices, such as wheelchairs and hearing aids, making it increasingly difficult to navigate daily life.

According to the UN, individuals with disabilities face significantly higher risks during active conflicts. Some are unable to hear urgent evacuation warnings, others are unable to see designated safe routes, or they face extreme difficulty moving without assistance when fleeing from areas targeted by airstrikes.

The organization also highlighted the continuously deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. The vast majority of the population still experiences repeated displacement and lives in a profoundly unsafe environment, with very limited access to basic survival services.

The UN added that overcrowded emergency shelters, damaged buildings, as well as temporary facilities lacking clean water, sanitation, and essential protection services, pose much greater challenges for people with disabilities compared to other groups in the community.

The world body once again reminded the global community that vulnerable groups, including people with disabilities, women, children, and the elderly, remain the most severely affected parties in the ongoing conflict in the Gaza area.
